#Licenced To Lock
What do we mean by electronic access control? Systems where a fob or swipe card, pictured, are used in conjunction with a card reader to gain access to the premises.
Access control is a matter of who, where and when. An access control system determines who is allowed to enter or exit, where they are allowed to exit or enter, and when they are allowed to enter. Historically, this has been accomplished through mechanical lock and key systems.
Although lock and key systems have the ability to offer a high level of security, they can not be set up to restrict user access to specific times and dates. More importantly, keys do not provide records or audit trails of when and where the key was used, and can easily be transferred to an unauthorised person. Electronic access control solves these problems.

In the past 2-3 years, electronic access control has reduced significantly, such that the difference in cost between lock and key systems and electronic access control has drastically reduced. This is not only due to the decrease in cost to manufacture the components, but also as a result of the introduction of wireless and battery powered access control systems such as Salto. This is why it is now an affordable option for residential home owners, large corporations and everything in between.
